Happy New Year!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful break!  I am resending the focus section of the last newsletter as a reminder of the changes that will be in place when students return on Tuesday, January 7th in regards to the construction on the FHS campus.  FHS will begin the day on Tuesday with a two hour delay due to predicted extreme cold weather conditions.  Students should report to 3rd period at 9:50 AM.

Please read the following carefully.

From December 18:

Greetings Falcon Family,

Our area of FOCUS for this newsletter is expanding facilities at Florence High School.  Over the past two years the landscape of the Florence High School campus has changed dramatically and continues to evolve.  With the addition of the Indoor Athletic Facility and as the Florence Freshman Center and Soccer Complex move closer to completion, the FHS campus has taken on a very different appearance.  As a new year approaches, expect to see even more forth coming, significant changes. During the holiday break construction will begin on the new office complex as well as the renovation of the exterior of the auditorium.   The new office complex will eventually house the main office, bookkeeping, attendance, guidance department and school nurse.  The current office area will be transformed in specialized classrooms including state of the art technology labs.   The auditorium will receive a much-needed structural update to the outside and inside.   Over winter break the band room will also receive major improvements to the interior.  This is a very exciting time, but it will also bring some temporary inconveniences especially related to traffic flow, parking and the main entrance into the building.  Please note the following changes that will be in place when students return from winter break.

·        The main entrance and doors the front office will be blocked due to construction.  The new main entrance will be on the west end of the building.  All visitors should enter through the southernmost doors on the west end (Commons area) of the school.

·        Ms. Jay and the attendance office will be located in the Commons in front of the auditorium.  The current ticket booth will be converted into a temporary attendance office.  All visitors must check in with her and obtain a visitors pass before moving to other parts of the building.

·        The parking lot in front of the building, off Bradshaw Drive will be blocked except at the western most end.  This will be designated for visitor parking only and this parking will be very limited.    Students parking in this area that do not have a parking decals, must make alternative arrangements.

·        Buses will pick up in the outside westbound lane of Bradshaw Drive.  There will be no parent pickup in that area.

·        Official student drop off and pick up should occur in front of the canopies in the student parking lot in front of the Commons area.

·        The parking lot beside Career Tech will continue to be closed until closer to spring.  We will open that area for more parking in the student parking lot as soon as possible.

·        Once the Freshman Center opens in the spring, we will make a few more alterations to the flow of traffic.  This would include ALL traffic leaving FHS to be directed to exit toward Helton Drive.

·        The area around the construction site will be secured with construction fencing.  No one should enter into that area.  Crossing into the secure area would be a safety issue.

·        All students crossing Bradshaw Drive in the afternoon should do so with one of the appointed adults stopping traffic.  This helps ensure a safe crossing for students.

·        It is imperative that everyone drive slowly through the school zone.  We have requested that the Florence Police Department patrol the area to ensure the safety of our students and adults.

A map has been attached to the email that will hopefully help with the visualization of the changes.  Thank you for your patience, understanding and help.  We look forward to the wonderful facilities after construction has been completed.  We know it will be well worth the inconvenience upon completion.  Students, teachers, parents and community will have school facilities that will be functional and a source of pride.

We ALL NEED TO FOCUS on student attendance and make it a priority.

Every school day counts in a child's academic life...

FHS Attendance Update and Alert

Please help us help your child succeed in 2014. Make school attendance a priority!

Average attendance rate 91.85%

That is a 1.9% DECREASE for this

17 day period.

In 17 day period between 11/18-12/13, FHS averaged 77 all day absences

and 78 tardies to school or class each day.

10th Grade had approximately 27 students absent each day, which is 7.0%absence rate.

10th grade had 436 tardies for the 17 day period.

11th Grade had approximately 27 students absent each day, which is 9.1%absence rate.

11th grade had 483 tardies for the 17 day period.

12th Grade had approximately 23 students absent each day which is 8.3% absence rate.

12th grade had 409 tardies for the 17 day period.

Our phenomenal teachers can only teach our students, if they attend and are on time for school every day.

Parents, the only way to be in the “KNOW” at FHS is to be connected to iNow and Edmodo.

Mrs. Katie Dalrymple has received a grant for the Alabama Department of Education to do a semester internship in educational leadership.  She will be working as an administrative intern at FHS!  We are excited about this opportunity for her.  During her absence from the classroom, Mr. David Hope will be providing excellent, professional instruction for our theatre students!

We would like to welcome Mr. Hope to FHS!!

Congratulations to Ms. Paige Michael

Paige Michael was this week’s Tools for Teachers recipient from WHNT Channel 19 News!  She was awarded $319 as a token for her hard work and dedication!     The story can be viewed at  http://whnt.com/2014/01/01/tools-for-teachers-paige-michael/

·         Thursday, December 19 was also a day of giving!  The FHS percussion session under the direction of Mr. Russell Belote gave their time to come and perform a wonderful and unique rendition of the 12 Days of Christmas at the FHS employee Holiday Luncheon.  Thank you students and Mr. Belote for giving your time for the adults at FHS!
