Ms. Kyla Slaton

Ms. Slaton is the instructor for the Education and Training program. She also teaches Family Wellness and Food and Nutrition. She is in her 2nd year at Florence Freshman Center. Prior to joining our department, she served as a graduate assistant in the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of North Alabama where she received her Bachelors in Secondary Education: Family and Consumer Science and her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction. Her favorite part about teaching Education and Training is seeing her students have their "lightbulb moment"- when they find their love for teaching! She also enjoys seeing students express themselves in their creative projects for her courses.

Career and Technical Student Organization

    • Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences Education. It is the only career and technical in-school student organization with family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers and communities.

FCCLA is The Ultimate Leadership Experience. This organization gives students the tools they need to succeed whether they will go to college or enter the workforce upon graduation. In addition to learning valuable leadership skills, students have the opportunity to compete in state and national events, participate in community service activities, and travel around the United States to attend leadership conferences.

Our FCCLA Chapter has completed many community service projects in the past including the Sensory Sensitive Trunk or Treat, hosting a book drive for Read Across America week, and working at Room at the Inn. Last year, we had eight students compete in the STAR Events competition in Montgomery, AL and two students received bids to go to the National Leadership Conference in Denver, CO. In Denver, one of our members placed in the Top Ten in her event, Public Policy Advocate, and received a silver medal. We have plans to take at least 15 students to competition this next year, and our goal is to have at least 5 students receive bids to Nationals in Seattle, WA this summer.
