I moved from Huntsville to Florence when I was in the 5th grade. My senior year in high school was during the time of integration, Burrell Slater High School, the predominately black school was only going to house junior high, therefore all other grades had to choose between Bradshaw and Coffee High School. Fortunately everyone chose Coffee High because some of our favorite teachers were transferred there. After the decisions were made by the Florence City Board of Education, all seniors were granted their choice and could attend Coffee High School. Very Interesting senior year! I became the first African American cheerleader at Coffee. I attended College at Alabama A & M University in Normal, Alabama. I am a product of Florence City Schools which inspired me to become a teacher and Florence City Schools is a wonderful place to work, that is why I am still working after retirement!
