FCS Social Worker Sonja Croone named Shoals Woman of the Year

FLORENCE, Ala. — Excitement filled the room at the Renaissance Shoals Conference Center Tuesday afternoon when Florence City Schools Social Worker Sonja Croone was named the 2026 TimesDaily Shoals Woman of the Year.

Croone, a two-time nominee for the award, is known throughout the community for founding the the cancer awareness organization Pink Alabama. In Florence City Schools, her work as a social worker includes supporting and engaging with parents and families. She also founded the "Read and Right" program, which supports elementary student literacy.

As a foster parent, Croone opens her home — and her heart — to children in need.

"I'm just filled with excitement," Croone said. "I encourage people to get out and serve their community. That's what we all are here for: to serve and love on one another, and I'm so excited to be chosen as this year's Shoals Woman of the Year."

TimesDaily Shoals Woman of the Year recognizes a woman who demonstrates excellence in leadership, makes a visible impact on others, inspires those around her through integrity and presence, and goes above and beyond in service to her community.
