FLORENCE, Ala. — Florence City Schools welcomed a new interim superintendent on January 1. Bill W. Hopkins Jr. assumed the role following Dr. Jimmy Shaw's retirement.

Hopkins previously served as superintendent for Morgan County Schools and Fayetteville City Schools. He said during his time as interim superintendent, his focus will be on supporting students and staff, maintaining stability, and continuing the positive work already underway in the school system.

In a letter to the community, Hopkins said:

"I am honored to introduce myself as Bill W. Hopkins Jr., and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as the Interim Superintendent of Florence City Schools through May.

Florence City Schools has a long-standing tradition of excellence, community pride, and a strong commitment to students. It is a privilege to step into this role and work alongside dedicated educators, staff, families, and community partners who care deeply about the success and well-being of our children.

During my time as interim superintendent, my focus will be on supporting students and staff, maintaining stability, and continuing the positive work already underway in our schools. The safety and well-being of our students and employees will remain a top priority, and I am committed to ensuring our schools are safe, welcoming environments where students can learn and grow each day.

I also strongly believe that strong schools are built through strong community partnerships. Florence City Schools benefits greatly from the support of families, local organizations, businesses, faith-based groups, and community leaders. I look forward to strengthening those relationships and working together to support our students both inside and outside the classroom.

Open communication, collaboration, and shared responsibility are essential to our success. Your partnership matters, and I welcome your involvement, feedback, and continued support as we work together to provide the best possible educational experience for every student.

Thank you for your trust in Florence City Schools. I am excited about the months ahead and honored to serve this exceptional community."

Hopkins will serve as interim superintendent through May, after which a new superintendent will be appointed.
