Harlan's Kameron Young is News 19's Student of the Week

Harlan's Kameron Young is News 19's Student of the Week

FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — For News 19’s Student of the Week for the 2026 semester, we are kicking it off with a bang! We headed over to Harlan Elementary School to visit 4th grader Kameron Young!

Better known as Kam by his family and besties, his favorite classes are math and PE, but he’s also involved in the school’s show choir program. His favorite part of that is dancing!

Kam plays pretty much every sport: basketball, soccer, and football. Coming up later in the spring, he will start tackle football, which he is very excited about. Kam is also in the gifted program, and his teachers say he goes above and beyond in every aspect of his life, not stopping until things are perfect!

Harlan Elementary Principal, Dr. Thomas Casteel, said he knows Kam is going to excel at whatever he does because he has a good head on his shoulders, and he is always working hard. Kam is as humble as they come for being so involved and dedicated, never backing down from a challenge.

Kam is going through the travel basketball season right now and is killing it. He will have another game Saturday, Jan. 10th, and we wish him the best of luck!

Just like his principal told us, if every student could be like Kameron Young, the world would be a better place, and we’re just happy we got to highlight him.

We’re so happy the semester is back, and we cannot wait to visit even more amazing kids like Kam. To nominate a student of the week, email us at studentoftheweek@whnt.com or talk to your local school system today!
