Senior golfer Tate Oakley signs to play golf at Northeast Mississippi Community College

FLORENCE, Ala. — In Florence High School's first signing ceremony of May, senior golfer Tate Oakley formally announced his commitment to Northeast Mississippi Community College.

Oakley said he's excited for the next chapter and looks forward to what's coming. "Education—it's always the first thing," he said. And then plan to go there for two years and go to a bigger four-year university after."

Oakley plays golf now, but began his athletic journey with the baseball team. He said that since transitioning, his new teammates have become family. "Ever since I switched from baseball, they've been so good," he said. "They said, 'You got raw talent.' So, I just had to believe in myself, and they believe in me."

In addition to his teammates, he also credits his success to his first supporter, also known as Mom. "She helped me through the transition from baseball, since I was a little kid at golf, she's helped me every step of the way," he said.

Florence City Schools Athletic Director Byron Graham said that as of Oakley's signing, more than ten seniors have committed to play at the collegiate level in 2024-25.
