Florence welcomes Nichols as Head Volleyball Coach

  • Florence AD Byron Graham with Volleyball Head Coach Vickie Nichols(Monday, April 26) Florence Athletics Director Bryan Graham announced the hiring of Vickie Nichols who will take over the Falcon Volleyball program. Nichols spent the past four seasons at Mountain Brook compiling at 162-48 record and four consecutive trips to the “Final Four” of the Elite Eight Alabama High School State Tournament. In 2019, Under Nichols, Mountain Brook won the 7A State Title while setting a school record for wins on their way to 59-7 overall record. Nichols was chosen by her peers as the 2019 Alabama Volleyball Coach of the Year. The following season Mountain Brook moved to class 6A in 2020 where Nichols led the Spartans to another State Title.

    Prior to arriving at Mountain Brook, Coach Nichols taught and coached internationally at Alliance Academy in Quito, Ecuador. She also holds collegiate coaching experience as head coach at Samford University and as an assistant at Northwest Shoals Community College. Her coaching career also includes high school experiences across Alabama with roles at Hoover High School, Oak Mountain High School, and Hazlewood High School.

    A native of Florence, Coach Nichols prepped as a three-sport athlete at Bradshaw under Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Coach Noona Kennard. Upon graduating from Bradshaw, Nichols played collegiate volleyball at Mississippi State University. While in Starkville, Nichols earned Academic All-SEC honors each year and was selected Team Captain her junior and senior years. She also served as FCA President and competed internationally with Athletes in Action.

    Coach Nichols and husband Chris are the proud parents of 9 children and grandparents to 4 grandchildren.

    Nichols earned her Master’s in Education from the University of North Alabama.
