Degrees and Certifications:

Ms. Misty Buerhaus

I received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of North Alabama in 1999, a Masters of Education in Library Media from The University of West Alabama in 2007 and have been blessed to teach in three school systems, on six different campuses and in multiple grade levels. Working alongside some of the best educators in such a diverse journey has helped to better prepare me to serve in the role as a Media Specialist. There is something rewarding about each and every grade level and it’s such a pleasure to get to explore and inquire with all of the students each and every year. Before becoming a Media Specialist I had no idea that it carried with it celebrity status. Initially people would ask me why I left the classroom? Well, the truth is, I didn't. My class just grew by hundreds overnight. I get hugs and smiles almost everywhere I go. What a privilege and honor it is to be the Media Specialist and S.T.E.A.M. Coordinator for Kilby Laboratory. I have come full circle as I have returned to the place that gave me such a fantastic career foundation to grow on. What joy it brings me to know that I now have the chance to return the favor by pouring into and encouraging not only students but individuals embarking on their very own journey as educators as well.

When I am not in the Leo Lab, you will most likely find me chasing my favorite people; my goofy husband of twenty years Mr. Matt Buerhaus, and my three amazing children; Micah, Mason and Mollie. I enjoy hanging out with family and friends, serving at church, watching my kids play sports, good old fashioned card games, being outdoors, and traveling. I am so very thankful for this crazy life and oh how I do also treasure the quiet moments in-between when I can turn the pages of a good book. At this stage in my life, I am often drawn toward devotional and inspirational texts but the magic of Children’s Literature never gets old. It’s most difficult to pick a favorite but if you haven’t read The Book With No Pictures by BJ Novak to a group of kiddos you are missing out. Just do it, but be prepared for laughter galore.
