Weeden Elementary recognized as a Science of Reading Spotlight School

Weeden Elementary

FLORENCE, Ala. – The Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) recently shared the latest schools and local education agencies across the state that exemplify a commitment to science of reading (SoR)-based practices.

Weeden Elementary School was recognized as one of these Science of Reading Spotlight Schools. The recognition comes from the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) staff reviewing assessment data, evaluating coaching practices, conducting site visits to schools across the state, and collaborating with ARI Regional Specialists.

Weeden was selected based on certain criteria, which included Florence City Schools' commitment to foundational literacy for Alabama's K-3 learners and a building leadership team that works alongside local reading specialists and K-3 teachers to deepen their understanding of SoR.

On October 12, the ALSDE in Montgomery signed a resolution recognizing Weeden's commitment to SoR and its impact on students. Weeden will be used as an example for many other schools that are in the beginning stages of developing SoR practices. Videos will be created highlighting SoR evidence-based practices implemented at Weeden for statewide professional learning.
